Bathtubs 1995-97
Bathtubs is a series of portraits of people posing inside the constricted architectural space of the bathroom. Models pose underwater holding their breath or breathing through a plastic tube. All the images were shot with a 4x5" large format camera using time exposure lighting techniques ranging in durationfrom one to one-and-a-half hours. Bathtubs has autobiographical references and is evocative of past experiences. At the age of eighteen, after a severe skiing accident, I had four tubes inserted in my body. These tubes and the fluids they carried allowed me to live. This life experience became a direct inspiration for the series. All photographs are gelatin silver prints and archival digital prints editions of 5 prints, 2 Artist proofs 50x40", 30x24", 14x11".
